Fungi of British Columbia and the Salish Basin | Revised Sep 13, 2016 |
2024-09-21: This list & the alphabetical list mentioned below require updates to reflect additional species, newly reported species, and newer scientific names for many species, but as of this date there is a technical problem with the software used to produce it. In 2017 Paul Kroeger & Shannon Berch extracted records from the UBC & DAVFP herbaria and produced Macrofungus Species of British Columbia, available online by clicking on that link. That publication lists 3009 species, arranged alphabetically by order, family, genus, & then species, but does not include synonyms. It is nominally limited to "macro" fungi -- a subjective criterion. It does include many quite small fungi such as Orbilia for which individual fruit bodies are 1-2 mm in diameter, but does not include others such as Sarea/Zythia which are about 1 mm. The list below differs in that it does not exclude species based on size alone, and it lists them taxonomically, together with synonyms that have been used in publications over the last few decades. Given the rapid and accelerating changes in the scientific names of fungi in BC, both lists are in serious need of updates. What follows is the original list from 2016-09-13.
This is a list of fungi (2725 species in 728 genera & 202 families), excluding lichens, yeasts, & zoogenic fungi, that have been reported to occur in British Columbia in published references, herbarium collections, &/or personal reports of experienced taxonomists. Taxa for which the author has seen reports of occurrence in the Salish Basin of BC appear as text in this color, but otherwise are highlighted (989 species, with herbarium records yet to be reviewed for 539 of those, marked with an asterisk). Taxa reported to occur in BC which were taken from a list of BC fungi prepared by Shannon Berch, Jim Ginns, Marty Kranabetter, Paul Kroeger, Christine Roberts, & possibly others, for which there is no location information and for which there are no specimens in the UBC or DAVFP herbaria or literature references known to this author, are highlighted in red (66 species). This is not yet a complete list of the fungi reported for British Columbia, estimated at ~4600 species, and there is no such list, but this list contains the vast majority of the larger fleshy fungi and commonly observed species. For several orders (Lahmiales, Botryosphaeriales, etc.) a single species has been entered as a "placeholder" for the order. Further species and Salish Basin records are being added as time permits.
Relatively few of the fungi on this list have common names and such names are omitted here. Selected synonyms are indicated by '='. Taxonomy, mostly following Index Fungorum (www.indexfungorum.org) &/or Mycobank (www.mycobank.org) attempts to be current, but recent changes may not be reflected here. For an alphabetical list, see here. Please email any additions or corrections to the author (above) at firstname@lastname.ca (foiling the email trawlers).
This list should be used with caution for scientific purposes, e.g. for species distribution. Absence of a report does not mean that the fungus does not occur, and specimens in the scientific literature and collections, which form the basis of this list, are sometimes misidentified. For scientific purposes it is prudent to check original sources.
For descriptions and further BC distribution information for many taxa, see E-Flora BC, but note that the list here includes many taxa that E-Flora BC does not: specifically, groups such as rusts, leaf pathogens, and other "microfungi", taxa from herbaria and foray records which warrant additional verification, and some uncommon species that have not yet been added to E-Flora BC.
